Churchill’s Religious Goods & Giftsis celebrating 26 years of service to the northwest Ohio and southeastern Michigan Catholic community.
Owners Ken and Rose Churchill opened their first retail store located at 2991 Tremainsville Road in Toledo, Ohio across from their parish, St. Clement Church with only a small petition check from Mr. Churchill’s days of working at A & P Tea Company.
“At the time we were considering opening a Catholic retail store, there was only one in Toledo which seemed to cater mostly to church business and not the Catholic community as a whole. Ken and I took a risk and it was the best decision of our lives,” said Mrs. Churchill.
At 1,300 square feet, the store location soon became too small to keep up with the increasing stock and customer traffic. Nearly five years after originally opening, Churchill’s nearly doubled their space by moving to 2748 Tremainsville Road, a 2,400 square foot building down the street from their current store front at the time.
As business grew, in 1992, they found the need to expand yet again by adding an additional 1,800 square feet to the store in order to accommodate a separate vestment room, a larger gift and card aisles and the addition of a First Holy Communion section.
“We saw a real need to include a church goods and vestment room for clergy as well as a larger First Communion and Confirmation section,” said Mr. Churchill.
Then, in 1997, the pastor at Sorrowful Mother Shrine in Bellevue, Ohio approached Churchill’s to take over their shrine’s gift shop. Churchill’s considered themselves blessed to be asked to continue their ministry at the shrine and a few months later, they began stocking shelves and hiring additional employees including store manager, Rose Dick. Today, the shrine’s gift shop is one of the largest in the area offering Catholic articles to thousands of visiting pilgrims on a daily basis.
“We feel so blessed to have the calling to open these businesses. Throughout the years we have developed amazing relationships with those in our community while spreading the good news of Christ,” said Mrs. Churchill.
Unfortunately, Mr. Churchill passed away on September 25, 2007. He found his work be more of a ministry than really work. He especially enjoyed rejoicing in his customers joy and comforting them in their times of sorrow. No doubt his presence will be greatly missed by his family as well as all the customers who loved his insatiable humor and respected his great love for God and the church.
Today, Churchill’s is still a family-run business at their main location in West Toledo with the assistance of store manager, Sheila Churchill and son, Joe Churchill. The store continues to support the Diocese of Toledo as well as surrounding dioceses by offering an array of Catholic and Christian books, gifts and church goods. First Communion, Confirmation, RCIA and the Christmas holidays are their busiest times of year.

As a long time customer of Churchill's, I would like to commend you on the continued service you provide for the surrounding community. As the secretary of St. Anthonys Church in Temperance, Michigan, as well as being a regular customer for my personal shopping needs, I have experienced first hand not only the great selection of items available at the store, but also of the personal care given to the customers. I always recommend Churchill's as the place to go for any religious item needs for the best price, customer service and quality merchandise.
I look forward to many more years of dependable service from the Churchill Family.
